Spikers Nearly Conquer Westview Tourney

The Lady Warrior volleyball team nearly swept through the Westview Tournament, only to come up nine points short of a championship to Angola. The Lady Hornets claimed the title, beating Wawasee 25-20, 24-26, 15-6 in the championship match.

Wawasee won its pool by taking down Eastside 25-16, 25-22; John Glenn 25-16, 25-11; and West Noble 19-25, 25-18, 15-12 before meeting Angola in the final.

For Wawasee (6-3) on the day, Anne Beer led the team with 55 digs and 18 kills, Hunter Gaerte had 11 aces, Leeann McGuire 35 assists and Alli Ousley added 29 assists and seven aces. Also chipping in for the Lady Warriors were Aly Anderson with 49 digs and Taylor Spangle 14 kills.

“Overall a great day. We had a chance to win and fought for every point,” said Wawasee head coach Jeff Phillips.

Cross Country Reaching Greater Heights

The cross country teams returned to action after 10 days away from action by running in the Prairie Heights Invite, and the boys were in contention for the title, finishing third with 70 points, one behind runner-up West Noble. Fort Wayne Dwenger ran away with the title with 39 points.

Adam Doll (17:27), Reid Stichter (17:34) and Zach Cockrill (17:49) were 11th through 13th in the varsity standings at the PHI, with Austin Yoder 18th at 17:58 and Troy Carolus 23rd at 18:06. The JV race had Wawasee finish second (31) to Dwenger (28) with four Warriors running personal bests.

“In the varsity race, we had a great gap time with less than 40 seconds,” said Wawasee head coach Jerid Stoffel. “Dwenger and West Noble are traditionally strong programs and we nearly beat West Noble.”

The girls varsity race had Courtney Linnemeier run a 21:05 for seventh overall and Madison Miller added a personal best 22:19 for 12th overall. Wawasee had five JV runners also run personal bests. The team scores were not given for the girls races.

“The girls had a good day,” Stoffel said. Several girls ran season bests or even personal bests. The girls battled through the heat; we rested a couple of our varsity starters.”
