Chargers, Jimmies Fare Well At State

IHSAA SportsINDIANAPOLIS – It was a good night Friday for both the Elkhart Memorial and Jimtown wrestling programs at the State Finals.

The Crimson Chargers and the Jimmies each had a trio of grapplers earn wins in their first-round matches to advance in action at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The six wrestlers with wins Friday night advance to today’s quarterfinal round, which begins at 9:30 a.m. The consolations for the finals are at 5 p.m. with the championship round at 7:30 tonight.

Memorial got wins from seniors Christian Mejia and Nick Ritchie and junior David Eli.

Mejia defeated Colin Pointer of Portage by an 8-5 decision at 113 pounds. Mejia improves to 41-4 on the season.

Ritchie topped Steve Trammell of Lawrence Central, also by an 8-5 final, in first-round action at 170. Ritchie moves on with a 39-3 season mark.

Eli won by a pin in 2:59 over Grant Gofoth of Indian Creek at 182. Eli improves his season record to 40-3.

The Jimmies got wins from juniors Kenny Kerrn and Nick Mammolenti and freshman Hunter Watts. Kerrn defeated Taylor Crowl of Floyd Central by a technical fall in 5:05 at 145. Kerrn is now 45-4. Mammolenti edged Givoni Murillo of Portage 2-1 in overtime at 285 to run his season mark to 41-8. Watts won an 11-8 decision over Jose Diaz of Wheeler at 106. Watts is now 42-8.

A pair of seniors, Blake Gloguski of Fairfield and Hunter Langeloh of Columbia City, also posted first-round wins. Gloguski defeated Kyle Luigs of Evansville Mater Dei 12-5 at 120 pounds. Gloguski is now 46-2. Langeloh topped Isaiah Peetz of Columbus North in 5:29, also at 120, to improve his season mark to 35-1.

Area wrestlers who lost their matches Friday night included NorthWood sophomore Tanner DeMien (106), Jimtown sophomore Hunter Whitman (113), Elkhart Memorial senior Christian Mejia (126), Rochester senior Aaron Orr (132), West Noble sophomore Fernando Luevano (132), Columbia City senior Cross Dietrich (152) and Goshen senior Derek Paz (220).
