SYRACUSE —They were hot blooded about their performance and it was easy to see. They had a score of 103.

It was a foreign night of events for the Wawasee gymnastics team as the ladies topped 103 points for the first time in a decade on their way to a 103.15-95.875 win over East Noble.

“It’s funny because we started off very shaky with our vault routines,” said a lighthearted Nika Prather, Wawasee’s head coach. “I was concerned right from the get-go with this meet because we usually don’t have those issues on vault. But, this turned out to be a really good meet for us. We haven’t scored this high in 10 or 11 years.”

Monday night was a huge boost of confidence for an already confident Warrior squad as Wawasee finished behind East Noble at the Elkhart Central Invite nearly a month ago but has now proven it can best this sectional opponent.

The Warriors took first in three of the four events and also took the top three spots in the all-around category.

Wawasee did its best on the floor where two girls turned in scores above 9.0. Reagan Atwood won the event with a 9.65, ahead of Jada Parzygnot’s 9.25. Alyssa Minnix took third in the event with an 8.85.

That trio took the top three spots on beam as well with Atwood leading the way with a 9.05. Parzygnot earned an 8.55 while Minnix scored an 8.15.

Despite some rough landings Wawasee still managed for all five of its competitors to turn in solid scored on vault. Atwood again led the Warriors as she won the event with an 8.80. Ashleigh Frecker took second with an 8.55. Minnix took fourth with an 8.45 while Parzygnot (8.35) and Haleigh Smarr (8.15) rounded out the varsity scores for the event. East Noble’s Elizabeth Molen tied with Frecker for second in the event.

Wawasee’s performance on bars was better off not talked about but, then again, something needed to be said.

“Bars, oh mercy,” Prather said with a cringe. “One of the simplest skills, a cast squat on, we struggled with tonight. It was rough, we really need to clean up our bar routines and start to add a lot more difficulty. Reagan and Alyssa both added hand stands tonight, which was good. But, overall we have to get more difficulty to be starting with a higher score.”

East Noble’s Brianna Glass took first on bars with an 8.68 with Atwood coming in second with a score of 8.35. Parzygnot earned third with a score of 8.08.

Atwood and Parzygnot placed first and second the all-around with respective scores of 35.85 and 34.23. Glass tied for third with Minnix as both gymnasts recorded scores of 32.88.

Wawasee will now turn its attention to DeKalb on Thursday evening before getting a look at the entire sectional field at Saturday’s Lakeland Invitational.

“Our goal was 102 tonight, so this was just great and it only helps our confidence moving forward,” Prather remarked. “It’s kind of a balancing act with these scores. You don’t want to work too hard or overwork the girls because of injuries and you don’t want to peak too early. These girls get tired, they have to get some rest in between meets.

“On one hand I’m thrilled with tonight’s performance. But on the other I know that Elkhart Central is scoring around 107. So, we’ve got a ways to go before we’re competing with them. But we get to see them again, and the rest of our sectional this weekend as well as Carroll. It will be a really good chance to see where we stack up. We’ll be looking forward to that.”
