Inmate Injured In Elkhart County Correctional Facility

ELKHART — At 9:06 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, officers responded to an inmate who suffered from injuries after he jumped over and fell to the floor from a top tier railing located in an inmate ward at the Elkhart County Correctional facility.

The inmate, who was identified as 39-year-old Billy Ray Shoemaker, received immediate assistance from staff after falling and was transported by ambulance to the South Bend Memorial Hospital for his injuries. He is being treated for a skull fracture, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Billy Ray Shoemaker is being held at the Elkhart County Correctional facility for non-support of a child and has a $24,000 bond. The incident is still under investigation.
