Evelyn L. Auer, 92, a lifelong Whitley County resident, died at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, at Renaissance Village where she had been a resident since May 13.
She was born Aug. 5, 1923, in Whitley County, a daughter of Rev. Marion and Ida L. (Scarlett) Shroyer. She attended Blue River and Marshall Schools, graduating from Columbia City High School in 1942. On April 8, 1944, she was united in marriage to Robert H. Auer. They made their home on their farm until 2009 when they moved into Columbia City. They also wintered in Naples, Fla. for 20 years. Mr. Auer died Aug. 8, 2015.
A homemaker, she worked in the cafeteria at Columbia City High School, teacher aide at Coesse School and taught nursery school at First Church of God.
She was a member of First Church of God where she served as a clerk and co-chair of the “We Care” ministry. She loved having family around her and her home was always open to family and friends. The family gathered there for homemade meals, especially her homemade pies. Evelyn spent joyful hours quilting, painting pictures, sewing and cutting the hair of kids and grandkids. Outdoors, she loved to garden, fish and help Bob whenever she could.
Surviving relatives include four children: Jeanne (Dennis) White, Columbia City; Margaret (Richard) Taylor, Columbia City; Jim (Ann) Auer, Milford; and Marcia (Karl) Ruetz, Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four siblings: Alice ‘Dutch’ Anderson; Betty Stalf; Robert Shroyer; and Elmer Shroyer.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. The visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to First Church of God or Heartland Hospice.
