FORT WAYNE – Triton went 1-2 to wrap up its day among the greats at the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Team State Tournament Saturday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

Wrestling among the Class 1-A teams, Triton lost to Knightstown 40-31 and Adams Central 56-15 before closing its tourney with a 42-36 win against Centerville. The three-class tourney, which featured the who’s who of wrestling programs from around the state, was put on by the IHSWCA to replace the team state tournament that no longer exists in the IHSAA state tournament.

Triton had an outside shot in the opener against Knightstown to earn a win. Trailing 37-31 with one match to go, 182-pounder John Salinas needed to get a pin. Knightstown’s Zach Clark had other ideas, keeping Salinas at arm’s length long enough to score a 3-2. Clark had a 3-0 lead in the third period, with Salinas scoring an escape then awarded a penalty point for Clark’s stalling with 13 seconds left.

Bryce Swihart, Malachi Greene, James Snyder and Nick Harker all earned falls in the dual, with Miles Ortiz getting a major decision and Gage Waddle a decision for the Trojans.

Adams Central overwhelmed Triton in round two, taking a 41-0 lead before Triton was able to respond. Salinas and Snyder scored falls and Waddle had another decision.

Round three went to Triton in exciting fashion. In the dual, 12 of the 14 matches were decided by pin, including the final matchup between Ryan Horne of Triton and Bryce Potts in the heavyweight card. With the score tied 36-36 on the team scoreboard, Horne needed 44 seconds to pin Potts to lift Triton to its team earmark.

Triton opened the match up 24-6 after Swihart, Adonic Salinas, Greene and Riley Chickering all got pins, then later used pins from Snyder, Waddle and finally Horne.

Overall, Prairie Heights won the Class 1-A title, with Bremen finishing seventh, Triton tenth and Churubusco twelfth.

Brownsburg won the Class 3-A title with Penn – the Al Smith champion – fifth. Bellmont beat Jimtown 46-23 to claim the 2-A crown.
