LIGONIER — It was a double dip of success for the Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team Saturday. The ladies played two very different games on their way to winning the West Noble Holiday Tournament.

After shooting 82-percent and winning 74-17 in the first game of the day against Concord, the No. 6 ranked Lady Vikings turned around for a 58-42 win over West Noble in the championship game.

Addy Miller got things going early for Valley in a very physical first quarter as she hit a trio of threes to help her team jump out to a 22-11 lead going into the second. Miller finished tied for the team lead in points with 15. The gap closed by halftime as West Noble was able to cut the Valley lead down to 30-21 but the third quarter would prove to be devastating to the Chargers upset attempt.

Valley used good ball movement and its overall size advantage to help build up it lead in the third quarter. Meredith Brouyette capped her team’s 19-point frame with a buzzer beating three, giving Valley a 49-29 advantage.

West Noble did not go easily, but it was too little too late. The Chargers opened up the fourth on an 11-0 run to get the game back to a manageable 49-40 deficit. West Noble scored just once after that opening run.

“West Noble is a good team,” began Valley head coach Chris Kindig, “they’ve got some shooters and you’re playing them at home, give them credit today. I like the fact that we had a little bit of a closer game today. We haven’t been challenged much since playing Westfield. It was nice to see the girls have a little more pressure on them and to see how they responded.”

Valley’s performance and response to situations all day was excellent. Against Lakeland 10 different players scored for Kindig’s squad, with Anne Secrest leading the way with 21. Against West Noble the Lady Vikes had three girls hit double digits. Secrest and Miller each had 15 while Brynda Krueger added 14 of her own.

“I said at the beginning of the year that this team would be different, but I didn’t say if we’d be better or worse,” Kindig stated. “I think this team can be better than last year’s.

“The girls are playing hard and playing together and I really like their attitude. We had some things we needed to improve on today, but that’s okay. We don’t want to be playing our absolute best already. We still have time to improve and grow.”

Valley 13-1 will host Logansport on Tuesday. West Noble (9-5) will host Fort Wayne Blackhawk, also on Tuesday.

In the JV tournament Valley finished second to West Noble after losing the title game 47-32.
