Tigers Advance Three At Al Smith
MISHAWAKA – Day one of the mega-tough Al Smith Invite has three Warsaw wrestlers advancing to day two’s championship and consolation brackets.
The trio of 132-pounder Kameron Hile, 138-pounder Kyle Hatch and 220-pounder Andrew Brock are all alive for second day action at the Invite in what many around the state consider to be the top collection of high school individual wrestling talent in the state this year.
Hile, who lost his first match by 4-2 decision to Center Grove’s David Roth, rallied to win his next four contests to finish 4-1 and alive in his weight class’ consolation bracket. Hile’s wins came in four straight decisions against Penn’s Jarrett Selis (10-3), Rochester’s Aaron Orr (8-0), Merrillville’s James Davis (12-3) and Lawrence North’s Adrian Gardfrey (8-0).
Hile (7-2 overall) will face Munster’s Cody Crary in the consolation ladder. Crary is 17-1 this year.
Hatch continued his undefeated march this season in the 138-pound championship bracket. Hatch (20-0 overall) scored three pins, beginning with Bellmont’s Collin Mills in 2:58. Hatch then got Center Grove’s Anthony Williams pinned to the mat with 18 seconds left in the third period, and closed out Garrett’s Zane Hargrove at 3:34. Hatch will meet Portage’s Kris Rumph (10-4) in the semi-finals.
Brock (19-1 overall) used three straight decisions to work his way to the 220 semi-finals. Brock cleared Zionsville’s Grant Grayson 3-0, then worked over Columbus East’s Austin Sheckles 7-1, and closed out Merrillville’s Brandon Streck 3-0. Up next for Brock in the semi-finals is the top 220-pounder in the state in Penn’s Kobe Woods, who is 10-0 this season and the defending 220-pound state champion. Woods, a senior, has won 55 matches in a row dating back to his sophomore season.
Day two is a first for Hile and Brock while Hatch has finished first as a sophomore and fourth as a freshman at the Al Smith Invite.
Woods and Penn, the defending team state champion, currently sit atop the team standings with 132 points, four points ahead of Portage with six other schools currently at 102 points or better. Warsaw has 38 team points, good for 27th heading into day two.
Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday with the finals set for roughly 1:30 p.m.
