GOSHEN — The Elkhart County Extension Homemakers are hosting their annual heritage skills classes from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Elkhart County Purdue Extension Office, located on the 4-H fairgrounds, Goshen. Classes are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Registration forms are available on the Purdue Extension Elkhart County office website. Pre-paid registration is required postmarked by Feb. 5. Fees will vary depending on the workshop and registration includes lunch. Classes must have a minimum number of five participants. If you register for a class that later becomes cancelled we will notify you and your check will be returned.

Beginning knitting: Full-day class, $40, limited to five participants; Using the basket weave stitch, you will create a clutch. All supplies are furnished and paid for by your registration fee. Supplies include a “How to Knit” book for each participant.

Intermediate crochet: Full-day class, $30, limited to five participants; Create a washcloth sampler using various stitch patterns. Learn increasing and decreasing stitches, crocheting in a round, joining and finishing. Participants must bring a size H or I crochet hook. All other supplies will be provided. Participants must know how to slip stitch, chain, single crochet, half-double and double crochet. Knowing how to read a pattern is helpful.

Woven fruit basket: Full-day class, $45, limited to six participants; This fruit basket is a very simple weave great for beginners. The base is 10 inches by 5 inches and 7 inches high in the back with tapered sides. Participants should bring a pencil, tape measure, sharp scissors, small flathead screwdriver and metal clips or clothespins. Basket weaving materials are provided in the class fee.

Crazy quilt embellishment stitches: Half-day class, $23, limited to 12-15 participants; practice embellishment stitches on a crazy quilt block to create a decorated piece of fabric that you can take home to make a pillow top, tote bag or any item of interest to you. Participants must bring embroidery scissors, a 6-inch embroidery hoop or a size that fits comfortably in the hand, other sewing supplies such as a thimble and lighting and/or magnification.

English paper piecing: Half-day class, $25, limited to 10 participants; This class teaches the English paper piecing technique for making quilts or small project blocks. Participants must bring fabric cutting scissors. All other supplies are provided. Pre-requisites: participants must have a basic knowledge of hand-sewing.

Locker hooking: Half-day class, $35, limited to 20 participants; Create a mug rug/trivet using the locker hooking technique. Participants must bring scissors. All other supplies will be provided.

Paper piecing: Half-day class, $25, limited to 12-15 participants; Using a paper template, stitch on the line to create a paper-pieced quilt square. Participants must bring their sewing machine, neutral colored thread, sewing supplies, fabric cutting shears or a rotary cutter, mat and ruler; an open-toe applique foot or a foot that will provide good visibility.

Penny mug rug: Half-day class, $27, limited to 12 participants; Learn the history of penny rugs and make your own 5-inch, scalloped, 100 percent wool mug rug. Participants must bring fabric scissors, a penny, a quarter and a 50-cent piece. All other supplies are provided. Beginners are welcome. Participants must be able to thread a needle.
