William (Bill) “Pecky” Peckham, 88 of Bourbon, Ind., passed away at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, in his son’s home at Atwood, Ind. He had been in failing health.

Pecky was born July 6, 1924, in Newport, R.I., to William Peckham and Emma Doole Peckham.

Bill was a taxi cab and limousine driver in the Newport area. He had driven people such as Milton Burl, the Duke and Duchess of Winsor and Jacquelyn Bouvier (Kennedy).

He was a resident of Bourbon for many years. Bill was a Veteran serving in the United States Navy in World War II. He was a semi truck driver for many years and  had driven over 5 million miles in 49 of the 50 states.

Locally Bill served as a police officer on the Bourbon Police Department for a couple of years.

He was an avid old car collector and a member of the Bourbon Car Bunch. He was very proud of his 1968 Chevrolet El Camino which he showed at many car shows in the area. Bill also served his community as a past employee of the town of Bourbon and Etna Green where he frequently visited the coffee shops. He was a member of the Bourbon Lions Club for 22 years and president for 6 years, Bourbon American Legion Post #424 and a member of the Moose Lodge. Bill also was a member of the Plymouth Church of the Brethren and formerly Mount Pleasant Church of the Brethren.

On May 30, 1956, he joined in marriage to Lucille Welborn, who passed away September 8, 1992.

He is survived by his three children: Larry (Willa) Peckham and Allen Peckham, all of Bourbon; Joel (Luan) Peckham, Atwood, Ind.; and a brother: Alfred Russell Peckham, Middletown, R.I.

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Linda; and two sisters: Alice Ficke and Miriam Whittmore.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home ,115 S. Main St. Bourbon, Ind. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bourbon, where burial will follow with Military graveside honors by the Bourbon American Legion.
