WARSAW – It took a while to get going, but once the swimmers got into the pool, much was to be had at Saturday’s Warsaw Swim Invite. The Tiger boys reclaimed the Invite title with a resounding 649.5 points to blow away the field of seven teams. The Lady Tigers put up a good fight but ended up third with 330 points, well behind champion South Bend Riley.

Starting over an hour behind schedule due to a team arriving late, the day was already going to be long. But Warsaw made the most of its chances, notably on the boys side, taking five top-threes in the first four events. Ethan Cook picked up a title in the 200 free at 1:52.87 with teammate Hudson Snyder landing third.

Cook would later take third in the butterfly and help the 200 free relay to a title at 1:33.89, joined by Matt Wildman, Alex Cook and Snyder. Wildman would finish third in both the 50 and 100 freestyles and Snyder second in the 500.

Nick Zogbi was third in both the backstroke and the individual medley, Zach Taylor was second in the IM, and Warsaw placed second in the medley relay and third in the 400 free relay.

“I think this was a good testament that we’ve still got some talented guys on this team,” said Warsaw head coach Tony DeBrota of the boys. “They swam hard at the start and swam fast for me the majority of the meet. They started slowing down more than I’d like at the end of the meet. So we have some more conditioning to do. The first-place standing was still great to see.”

Fort Wayne Snider was second in the boys standings with 480 points, followed by Penn at 302.5.

Warsaw’s girls opened with a title in the medley relay, where Laurel Kuhl, Delaney Wihebrink, Brenna Morgan and Olivia Herman clocked in at 1:56.69, then Morgan jumped back in to win the 200 free at 1:55.90. Morgan would later return to capture the 100 free title at 52.63 and help Warsaw’s 200 free relay to a runner-up finish.

Wihebrink would finish second in the breaststroke and Herman third in the 50.

Riley’s title saw Snider finish runner-up with 429 points, Warsaw third at 330 and Penn fourth at 308 among nine teams.

“Really awesome swims today,” started DeBrota of the girls. “I am seeing growth from our younger girls which is exciting. It always is when improvement of any degree is made. I would have liked to have gotten second as would the girls, but we still did better than last year and that’s what counts.”

Warsaw returns to action Tuesday in Middlebury when Northridge hosts a Northern Lakes Conference triangular with Warsaw and Memorial.
