Valley Girls Ace First Road Test
PLYMOUTH – The Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team aced its first road test of the season Thursday night.
A red-hot start carried the Vikings to an impressive 48-32 non-conference win at Plymouth.
Valley, coming off its first loss of the season Saturday night, blazed to an 11-0 lead to open the contest en route to the dominating win. Valley set the tone in the win with its pressure defense.
The Vikings, who are now 6-1, led 11-4 after the opening period of play. Coach Chris Kindig’s team then outscored the host Pilgrims 24-5 in the second stanza to take a 35-9 halftime lead. Plymouth had 15 of its 18 turnovers in the game in the first half.
Valley, ranked No. 8 in Class 3-A, responded in a big way after losing 50-44 to a strong Westfield team (ranked No. 10 in Class 4-A) Saturday night in the title game of their own Thanksgiving Tournament. The Vikings had played their first six games on their home floor to open the season.
Junior star Anne Secrest and outstanding junior guard Meredith Brouyette each scored 12 points to lead Valley to the victory.
Senior Brynda Krueger finished with 10 points and sophomore Addy Miller six for the winners. Junior Hannah Dunn tallied five points and freshman Sophie Bussard three for the Vikings.
Freshman Halle Reichard led Plymouth with 10 points. Junior Nicole Horvath and sophomore Cortni Cook each had six points for coach Dave Duncan’s team.
The Pilgrims drop to 6-2 on the season.
Plymouth won the junior varsity game by a 50-14 final.
Valley will play its next four games also on the road with contests at Wabash, Triton, North Miami and Winamac. The Vikings return home on Dec. 19 for a huge Three Rivers Conference game versus Whitko. The Wildcats are currently 7-1 and ranked No. 9 in Class 2-A.
Valley plays at Wabash in a conference game Saturday night. Plymouth hosts Goshen Saturday night in a Northern Lakes Conference contest.
