Sarah Lou Gayer, 93, Fort Wayne, formerly of Largo, Fla., died at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City.

She was born May 27, 1922, in Muncie, a daughter of Claude L. and Ilo M. (Lyons) Reser. Her formative years were spent in Muncie where she graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1940. She was a cheerleader for the Muncie Central High School Bearcats. She furthered her education at Ball State where she studied nursing.

On Oct. 17, 1956, she was united in marriage to Robert Gayer, Sr. They made their home in Newcastle. In 1979, the couple moved to Largo, Fla. Mr. Gayer died in 1986. A full-time homemaker, she volunteered at the USO and as a “gray lady” at the Henry County Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by a daughter: Claudia (Robert) Kneller, Columbia City; a son: Robert N. Gayer, Jr.; and 11 grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by twin boys: Jerry and Terry Johnson; and a granddaughter: Mary Sarah Kneller.

In keeping with Sarah’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. Burial will be at a later date at Mountain Run Baptist Church Cemetery, Lebanon.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice in Sarah’s honor. Mail or deliver your check, payable to Heartland, to the funeral home. Smith and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
