VANCOUVER, CAN. — An Indiana couple survived the sinking of a whale-watching boat in Canada.

Five people died and one person is still missing after the boat went down off the coast of Vancouver Island.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Dr. Denise Weaver and her husband, Charles Carlson are from Valparaiso.

The doctor’s brother-in-law says Weaver suffered a heart attack.

The 56 year-old held onto a paddle and was in the cold water for 40 minutes.

Officials think hypothermia may have lessened the severity of the heart attack.

Weaver’s husband got trapped under the boat and had to come up several times before he was able to grab onto a life raft.

Carlson’s brother says he’s “banged up.”

Survivors told rescuers the boat capsized after being hit by a huge wave.
