STATE OF INDIANA — Over 1.3 million new cases were filed in Indiana trial courts in 2014 according to the Indiana Judicial Service Report.
The Indiana Judicial Service Report and Indiana Probation Report are produced annually by the Supreme Court’s Division of State Court Administration as required by Indiana statute (IC-33-24-6-3) and Supreme Court administrative rules.
The following is just some of the information available for the state (calendar year 2014):
- Over 1.3 million new cases were filed in Indiana trial courts
- 1,169 civil and criminal jury trials were held statewide
- 228,570 cases included an individual who went to court without a lawyer
- 271 murder cases were filed in trial courts
- 19,486 mortgage foreclosures were filed in the state
- 14,227 Child In Need of Services (CHINS) cases were filed
- An interpreter was used in 11,374 trial court cases
- 4,267 cases were referred to Alternative Dispute Resolution
- 121,649 adults were under supervision by court probation departments (as of December 31, 2014)
- Cities, towns, townships, counties, and the state spent $459 million to operate the courts
- Filing fees, court costs, user fees, and fines generated $173 million in revenue.
Kosciusko County Information
The annual reports also include statistics for individual counties. Here are a few statistics for Kosciusko County found in the report:
- A total of 12,895 new cases (criminal, civil and juvenile) were filed in 2014. The majority of these cases were infractions, 5,426, small claims, 1,865 and criminal misdemeanors, 1,842.
- There were 15,745 cases pending as of Jan. 1, 2014. By Dec. 31, 2014, there were still 15,905 cases pending. The report shows there were 12,724 cases disposed or resolved.
- There were four civil and criminal jury trials, with 818 cases disposed by bench trials and another 2,657 disposed by bench disposition. The county had 1,612 cases dismissed, most of which were criminal misdemeanors and infractions. A total of 338 cases were resolved by default and 611 through deferrals or diversion means.
- A total of 1,105 cases requested pauper counsel. A total of 7,306 cases were unrepresented.
- Expenditures for criminal indigent expenses for the county totaled $701,256. This is paid through a mixture of county funds and partial state reimbursements.
- A total of 369 adults were serving felony supervisions pending on Jan. 1, 2014. That department received 315 felony supervisions, 259 felony supervision dispositions, 259 supervisions closed and inactive. There were 425 supervisions pending as of Dec. 31, 2014, with 425 pending supervisions, with 676 felony cases pending as of Dec. 31, 2014.
- The county had 230 juvenile probation referrals pending as of Jan. 1, 2014, and received 405 referrals. The county had 306 referrals disposed with 329 pending at the end of the year.
- The county received $109,674 in restitution in the juvenile probation division.
On the financial side the total expenses for Circuit, superior 2 and probation for the year was $1.990,412. This includes personal services (jurors, fees for witnesses consultations, medical services, etc), supplies, and capital outlays (office and computer equipment, legal library).
