It took one bad inning, but the mistakes were enough to flood an 18-5 loss for the Wawasee All-Stars 12U softball team to the Indiana Mayhem Wednesday evening at the NSA B World Series.

Trailing just 8-4 heading into the sixth inning, a handful of errors allowed the Mayhem to blow the game wide open, sending Wawasee to its first loss of the tournament. More importantly, one more loss by the green and gold will knock the team out of the tournament.

Chloe Slusher led the All-Stars with two hits while Olivia Clouse drew three walks and scored a pair of runs.

The Mayhem were playing for its tournament lives, having lost one game in pool play, but will continue on in the winner’s bracket against the Licking County (OH) Starz. Wawasee, now 3-1, will look to stay alive with an 11:30 a.m. CST game Thursday against either the Silver Creek (Ind.) Cyclones or Indiana Diamond Batz.

“These young ladies are showing real maturity on the field and at the plate,” coach Larry Flannery offered from Portage post game. “This is a new experience for all of the girls and they are representing the Wawasee community in an amazing way. They even have some local Portage residents following their games.”
