Notre Dame SportsSOUTH BEND – So much, for the Luck of the Irish.

At least when it comes to injuries.

The Notre Dame football team, which had already lost five players, four starters, to season-ending injuries, including quarterback Malik Zaire and Tarean Folston, added another to the lengthy list on Saturday during a 30-22 win over Georgia Tech.

This time the pain for the Irish was self-inflicted.

Irish safety Drue Tranquill injured his right leg while celebrating a big play late in the first  half. Tranquill broke up a pass by Justin Thomas to TaQuon Marshall in the end zone with 16 seconds left and jumped up to celebrate. He was bumped in the air by linebacker Joe Schmidt and came down on one leg and crumbled to the ground clutching his leg.

Tranquill stayed on the ground for a moment before limping to the locker  as Georgia Tech kicker Harrison Butker missed a 43-yard field goal wide left.  He was on the sidelines with crutches in the second half, a big brace on his right leg.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly confirmed on Sunday that Tranquil suffered a torn ACL in his right knee. He will be out for the rest of the season.

Tranquill made his first start of the season against Georgia Tech and was second on the team with four tackles at halftime. He started three games last season before injuring his ACL in his left knee late last season.

Tranquill played his high school football at Carroll High School, just outside of Fort Wayne.
