FORT WAYNE — The Fort Wayne International Airport has landed a $12.8 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to support a runway rehabilitation project. Construction will begin next year on the $14 million project.

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority said flights will not be impacted by the project, since the airport’s second runway will remain open. Executive Director of Airports Scott Hinderman said the airfield improvements will ensure the airport can, “continue providing safe, efficient facilities for all users.”

Work is expected to begin in the spring, with a projected completion date of Aug. 30, 2016.

Earlier this week, Griffith-Merrillville Airport in Lake County announced it had received a $140,000 FAA grant. That funding will help it study the potential environmental impacts of acquiring nearby land.
