It’s bounce back time this week for both Warsaw and Wawasee on the prep gridiron.
The Tigers and the Warriors look to break into the Northern Lakes Conference win column after each dropped league openers last Friday night to formidable foes.
Warsaw travels to winless Elkhart Memorial looking to break a two-game losing streak. Wawasee hosts always explosive Concord in Syracuse.
Tippecanoe Valley wants to continue the momentum after its first win a week ago. The Vikings play host to undefeated Northfield in Three Rivers Conference action.
Whitko looks to also bounce back after its second straight close loss in week three. The Wildcats make the trek to face winless Rochester in TRC play.
The early season gauntlet continues for Triton. The Trojans, outscored 120-14 the past two weeks by ranked powers LaVille and Pioneer, host former conference foe Bremen in Bourbon.
Warsaw (1-2, 0-1) at Elkhart Memorial (0-3, 0-2), 7 p.m.
Phil Jensen has no qualms with the effort of his football team in its 1-2 start.
It’s the consistency of his offense and some key injuries on defense that has the Warsaw mentor in concern mode right now.
“It’s a different mindset with this offense and all of us, players and coaches, are still learning,” offered Jensen. “We’re just not scoring enough right now and putting our defense in a tough spot. We need to score more points per possession with this offense.”
Memorial has lost a pair of tough ones under new coach Scot Shaw. The Chargers, who have won just five games in the last three years (including 1-9 a year ago), coughed up a big early lead in a week one 28-25 loss to rival Central and then dropped a 17-14 final at undefeated Goshen last week in the final minute. Friday night will be the first home game this fall for Memorial.
“Memorial has the potential to be a dangerous team,” said Jensen. “Their numbers are up this year and they have some athletes out. We can not give up the big plays to them. They have to earn what they get. We also have to score more points than we have been.”
The outstanding defensive duo of Dylan Childers (ankle) and Jeremy David (hamstring) are both expected to miss this week according to Jensen.
“I’m concerned, but injuries are part of this game,” stated Jensen Wednesday. “Losing those two is tough, but we need some younger guys to step in and step up for us.”
Warsaw beat Memorial 24-0 last year.
Concord (2-1, 2-0) at Wawasee (2-1, 0-1), 7 p.m.
It’s a process for the Warriors as they look to get their new offensive system into full mode.
“Our focus is to go out and compete every week and get better at what we do every week,” said Wawasee coach Josh Ekovich. “It’s a process and not something that can be picked up overnight.”
The Warriors misfired with numerous missed opportunities in a 21-0 loss to Northridge last week. Concord blanked NorthWood 19-0 under new coach Craig Koehler.
“Concord is definitely athletic, they always have athletes, and do what they do well,” noted Ekovich. “We just need to limit their possessions by controlling the ball as much as possible.”
Concord beat the Warriors 44-21 last season.
Northfield (3-0, 1-0) at Tippecanoe Valley (1-2, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Valley’s Darin Holsopple moved on from his first win as a high school coach pretty fast.
“It was pretty exciting, but I was watching film of Northfield by midnight last Friday,” admitted Holsopple. “It was not about me. It was about the first win for these seniors. That’s my concern. I’m here coaching for them and I was real proud of them.”
Valley, after two close losses, won 32-23 at North Miami. The Vikings host a Northfield team that blanked Southwood 40-0 last week.
“They are a good, good team that presents a lot of problems,” said Holsoplle of the Norsemen. “They have experience, are very athletic and play hard. We need to control their option. A big key too will be our blocking up front.
“Our guys have bought in and been positive the whole way. We’re not focusing on the wins and the losses. We are looking to play hard and fight the entire game each week.”
Northfield topped Valley 40-22 last season.
Whitko (1-2, 0-1) at Rochester (0-3, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Whitko coach Josh Mohr has seen a lot to like from his team despite two close losses in a row.
“I’ve been very proud of our kids for how they have moved on from our losses the last two weeks and worked harder in practice to get better,” said Mohr. “I’ve seen them push to get better and that’s going to pay off for them.
“It’s just the little things that we need to clean up. We’ve been our own worst enemy at times with some mistakes.”
Rochester is off to an 0-3 start after losing quarterback Brett Abbott in the opener versus Glenn to a season-ending injury.
“Throw the records out for this one,” noted Mohr. “Rochester will be ready to play. It’s a very emotional game, a rivalry and the first in our division in the TRC. Rochester is well-coached, physical and always fundamentally sound.”
Rochester whipped the Wildcats 56-14 in 2014.
Bremen (2-1) at Triton (1-2), 7 p.m.
It might not be a conference game anymore, but Triton will be ready to go when Bremen arrives Friday night.
“Our kids are already fired up,” said Triton coach Ron Brown of hosting the Lions.
Bremen, along with Glenn, Jimtown and New Prairie, left the former Northern State Conference to join the Northern Indiana Conference this year. The Lions sit at 2-1 after beating Glenn 28-12 last week.
“We just need to take the fight to the other team,” noted Brown. “We need to hit people and be aggressive and attack. Our focus right now is on blocking and tackling better.”
Bremen beat Triton 34-13 a year ago.
