BOURBON – The rain started to fall just as the final court finished up in a match between rivals Tippecanoe Valley and Triton Tuesday night. The Vikings held on to win that final court, three singles, and would leave Triton High School with a 4-1 win.
“Once we got our feet underneath us, our strokes came around and we played pretty well,” said Valley head coach Jack Shambaugh.
Shambaugh’s team did have a few bumps along the way, but taking four courts certainly left the Vikings feeling good.
No two kids may have been happier on the Vikings roster than the No. 2 doubles team of Eric Wright and Kane Steller. Wright and Steller held on for 7-6, 6-2 victory over Triton’s Brenden Damron and Keygan Moiser. The first set included an 8-6 win in tiebreak from the Valley boys.
“Two dubs started off well then struggled towards the end,” said Triton head coach Al Peckham. “That’s one of my ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ type teams. They’re either clicking or they’re not.”
The only Trojan that seemed to be clicking on Tuesday was Mace Eads who found himself a win at No. 2 singles.
“Mace has just been getting every time,” Peckham said. “He’s taken advantage of some of the guys that he’s played, learned from them and has brought his level up.”
Eads scored won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 over Valley’s Keith Wright.
Nick Caudill gave Valley its fourth and final win of the night three singles. Caudill held off Aaron Stichter for a 6-3, 7-5 victory. Trevor Neeley picked up a win over Gavin Eads at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win. At No. 1 doubles it was Dakota Parker and Seth Hoffman downing Dalton Bailey and Chase Butler 6-4, 6-4.
It was nice for Shambaugh to see so many straight set wins, but there is still work to be done for the Vikings.
“Sometimes we just have to settle down,” Shambaugh said. “That’s kind of how it was tonight, we were out in front of everything tonight for a while. Our feet weren’t in the right place at the right time. But once we stopped rushing things we started playing better and that’s what we have to focus on the rest of the season.”
As for the approaching storm, Shambugh said his boys were far from bothered by the windy conditions, and for good reason.
“We really weren’t concerned too much about the wind. We play at Tippy Valley, it’s windy there everyday,” Shambaugh said with a smirk.
Valley is now 3-3 on the season. Triton falls to 3-8.
On JV court competed and it was Valley’s Parker Dalrymple beating Augsto Salgado 8-7 (7-4) in that lone match.
