South Bend Closes With Shutout Win
EASTLAKE, OH – The South Bend Cubs ended the 2015 season with a shutout win at Lake County Monday, winning 3-0. Trevor Clifton worked into the seventh inning, giving up just two hits.
South Bend would take advantage of a Captains error in the top of the third inning to score the only run they would need. Vimael Machin started the inning by reaching on a fielding error, the second of the game for the Captains. He would then steal second and move to third on a groundout. With two outs Kevin Encarnacion singled to bring in Machin for a 1-0 Cubs lead.
The Cubs would add another run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out Jesse Hodges doubled and would come around to score on an RBI single by Erick Castillo to push the Cubs lead out to 2-0.
In the top of the eighth inning the Cubs would add their final run. With two outs Ian Happ would walk to extend the inning. Jordan Hankins would then single to put runners at first and second. Happ would then come around to score on an RBI single by Hodges to push the Cubs lead out to the final of 3-0.
The Captains lone offense would be three hits spread out over three different innings. Grant Fink singled in the second. Taylor Murphy singled in the fifth and Austin Fisher singled in the ninth.
Clifton (10-8) struck out five and lowered his ERA to 3.98 for the season in 23 games worked. Sam Wilson worked the ninth to pick up his second save of the season. Jordan Milbrath (7-11) took the loss for Lake County, giving up six hits and two runs.
South Bend ends its season 65-72 overall in its first season as the Chicago Cubs Class A affiliate.
