GRACE WOMEN 117, HOLY FAMILY 38

Grace college’s women’s basketball set a new team record for points on Saturday afternoon with a 117-38 defeat of Holy Family.

Grace (6-1) led from start to finish and pummeled Holy Family (0-5) with one of the most dominant games in team history.

The 117 points that Grace scored beat the previous program record of 111, set in 1995 against Rose-Hulman.

Four players had double digits, and all 15 of the Lady Lancers got on the score sheet. The bench contributed 66 points to Grace’s record total.

The Lady Lancers shot a blistering 88 percent in the opening quarter, including 7-of-8 from the three-point line. Grace’s ferocious defense forced 14 turnovers which resulted in 22 points.

Brooke Treadway was one of nine Lady Lancers to score in the period, and she led all players with eight points. Maddie Ryman put an exclamation mark on the quarter when she sunk a half court buzzer beater to give Grace a 47-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Grace pulled back the reins in the second quarter as the entire bench saw playing time. The Lady Lancers continued to build on the lead, taking a 55-point advantage into the half at 67-12.

Treadway led the Lady Lancers with 12 points and five rebounds, and Micaela Box chipped in nine points and three rebounds off the bench.

Grace had 22 fast break points and scored 31 points in the paint before halftime. The Lady Lancers shot 66 percent from the field and 61 percent from deep. Grace also had a 26-9 advantage in rebounds.

Grace’s starters scored 19 points in the opening four minutes of the second half before being subbed out for good. Kyannah Stull led the starters with 15 points, and Vironnica Drake filled the stat sheet with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Rachel Montgomery put Grace over the century mark with 50 second left in the third quarter, putting in a shot after an offensive rebound. The Lady Lancers led 100-24 going into the final quarter.

The Lady Lancers relied on their bench the entire fourth quarter as they coasted to a 117-38 win. Grace’s 79-point win was one point away from the largest win in team history.

Freshman Nikki Toth finished the game eight points and seven rebounds. Fellow first-year Lady Lancer Mackenzie Pulley added 6 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

The Lady Lancers finished the game shooting 52 percent from the field and held a 57-25 edge in rebounds.

Treadway narrowly missed the double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds. Kaylie Warble was a force in the paint with 14 points and three offensive boards.

The Lady Lancers will remain home on Nov. 23 with a nonconference matchup with Judson at the Manahan Orthopedic Capital Center.

SHAWNEE STATE MEN 69, GRACE 52

Grace’s men’s basketball team was held to a season-low output in a 69-52 defeat to Shawnee State on Saturday.

The game wrapped up Grace’s annual Terry Polston Hoops for Hope, which raised thousands of dollars every year for cancer care in Kosciusko County.

Jaret Sons was the lone Lancer to score in double figures, netting 10 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

The Lancers (4-3) shot 32 percent from the floor as a team, including 8-of-29 (28 percent) on 3-pointers. Grace was also outrebounded 46-27 by the NAIA Div. I Bears (7-2).

The game started evenly as both teams played stifling defense in a halfcourt battle. Hank Smith came off the bench to give Grace a spark, hitting a pair of 3-pointers.

Smith’s second triple tied the score at 25-25 with 6:50 remaining in the half. But the Bears’ defense took control at that point.

Shawnee State held Grace to just one more basket over the final 6:49 — a triple by Haden Deaton.

As a result, the Bears ended the half on a 13-3 run to lead 38-28 at halftime. Grace was held to 36 percent shooting in the half compared to 52 percent for Shawnee State. Sons scored eight points before halftime to lead Grace.

Shawnee State’s defense was even tighter in the second half. The Bears refused to let Grace make a run, and the Lancers trailed by double digits for the entirety of the half.

Grace made 28 percent of its attempts after halftime and 14 percent from beyond the arc.

The Lancers did hold Shawnee State to 16 points below their season scoring average of 85 points per game.

Charlie Warner produced nine points to go along with two steals, and Smith and Cody Holmes scored five points off the bench.

At the conclusion of the game, Deaton was named to the All-Tournament Team. Sons was named the Charles Hollar Mental Attitude honoree for the weekend.

Next up, Grace will open Crossroads League play. The Lancers host Goshen on Nov. 26 at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

NORTHWOOD GIRLS 42, ROCHESTER 20

NorthWood won a defensive struggle at Rochester Saturday afternoon.

The Black Swish held Rochester to just five points in the first half, but held just a 10-point lead. NorthWood would pull away via the free throw line, making 20-25 chances while Rochester was just 3-10 from the stripe.

Kate Rulli and Kendal Miller each scored nine points to lead the Panthers (3-1) with Maddy Payne just behind at eight points.

Kensey McKee scored six of her team-leading eight points in the fourth quarter.

Rochester won the JV against NorthWood 21-12.

NorthWood is at home Tuesday against Elkhart Central.

OREGON-DAVIS GIRLS 89, LCA 34

After asserting itself at will against South Bend Career Academy a night ago, Oregon-Davis did a number on LCA in Hamlet.

The Calizo sisters, Tori and Jessi, combined for 24 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals, but it wasn’t nearly enough against the class 1-A power. Natalie Norris added five points and three boards in the loss.

LCA (1-2) hosts Churubusco Tuesday.
