WARSAW — A Milford man was sentenced to three years for two drug-related cases in Kosciusko Circuit Court Monday, Sept. 9.

In the first case, Ricky Anthony Johnson, 39, 427 E. CR 1150N No. 2, Milford, was charged with possession of methamphetamine and failure to appear, both level 6 felonies; driving while suspended, a class A misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a class C misdemeanor. In the second case, Johnson was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a level 6 felony; and resisting law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor. A charge of escape in the second case was dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

On Feb. 28, 2018, an officer with the Milford Police Department responded to a domestic violence complaint. Dispatch said a man, later identified as Johnson, had a suspended driver’s license and was leaving the residence in a vehicle.

According to court documents, the officer pulled the vehicle over and identified the driver as Johnson. While searching the vehicle, the officer found a glass smoking device containing a white residue that tested positive for methamphetamine.

On July 13, 2018, an officer with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office saw a yellow motorcycle operated by Johnson driving on the wrong side of the roadway. As the officer attempted to catch up to the motorcycle, the vehicle attempted to evade him and stopped at a residence.

While arresting and searching Johnson, the officer found a plastic bag containing methamphetamine. The officer then placed Johnson in handcuffs and into a patrol vehicle.

While officers spoke with a woman at the scene, Johnson removed one hand from the handcuffs, crawled through the cage opening of the patrol vehicle, opened the driver’s door and ran from the scene. Officers were able to catch Johnson and place him back inside the patrol vehicle.

In the first case, Judge Michael Reed sentenced Johnson to one year at the Indiana Department of Corrections for possession of methamphetamine. He was also sentenced to one year at the Kosciusko County Jail for driving while suspended and 60 days at KCJ for possession of paraphernalia. All of the charges will be served concurrently. A one-year sentence at the DoC for failure to appear will be served consecutively to all of the charges in the first case.

In the second case, Johnson was sentenced to one year at the DoC for possession of methamphetamine and one year at the KCJ for resisting law enforcement. One year of the sentence will be served on formal probation.

Both cases will be served consecutively. Jail time credit and possible restitution will be calculated at a later time.
