SYRACUSE — Thursday’s 8-mile run was only a warm-up for Suzi Swinehart. The Wawasee Flotilla Road Race women’s winner has her sights set on a much bigger prize and a much, much longer race a little over a week from now.
The Flotilla 8-mile actually came in the midst of a taper for Swinehart, who will run in the Badwater 135 from July 15-17 — a 135-mile ultramarathon starting in Death Valley and winding west to Mt. Whitney, Cali considered the most extreme footrace on the planet. Her 56:36 time set the pace for the women’s field Thursday, and she was happy with the performance.
“I feel great because it’s pretty warm and humid, and the heat didn’t bother me one bit. And that’s the biggest factor at Badwater is the heat. So I feel pretty confident about my conditioning,” said Swinehart, who was convinced to enter Thursday’s Flotilla run for the first time by her brother.

So what did Swinehart think about her first foray in the Flotilla?
“Loved the course. It’s somewhere new to run that I haven’t run before, and being near the lakes is always beautiful,” she said. “The people were great. The volunteers were friendly. It was a great experience.”
While Swinehart broke tape in the women’s 8-mile, a pair of Trine runners took home the prize in the men’s 8-mile and the women’s 3.3-mile races.
Flotilla veteran Derek Miller clocked 43:58 as the first runner into the chute in the 8-mile, while Evie Bultemeyer’s 19:24 represented the top women’s 3.3-mile time.
It was the second championship for Miller at the race, after his 44:55 time set the pace in 2015. His course knowledge served him well, since he was all alone in front of the field Thursday.
“It’s nice to know where the mile markers are at; it just helps with splits. This year I was pretty much all alone so it helped me just because I was kind of against the clock this year instead of racing other people,” he said.
“I haven’t had a lot of training this summer, but I’m getting back into it, so it feels good to rock one. That was good.”
Bultemeyer, who made the trip with Miller to Thursday’s race, is also just getting back to form after an extended cross country season that closed in mid-November with a 55th-place finish at the NCAA Division III nationals as the first women’s runner in Trine history to compete at the meet.

“I didn’t have too many expectations coming in really because I didn’t know how I was feeling. I just started running again because I had a really long track season. I run 6ks for college now because that’s what the women have to run, so 3.3 wasn’t too bad for coming back,” she explained.
The men’s 3.3-mile prize went to Kent Yoder, who clocked 17:46 Thursday. Not too shabby considering it was Yoder’s first-ever Flotilla race.
“I always ran the Topeka 5k. I heard about this one, so I wanted to try it this year,” he said. “I just wanted to switch it up.”
Thursday’s event was the 42nd annual running of the race, and nearly 400 participants turned out for either the 8-mile run, the 3.3-mile run or the 3.3-mile fun walk around Lakeside Park in Syracuse, an uptick of more than 50 racers from last year’s event.
“To have 400 here speaks a lot about the tradition of the race. Forty-two years in a row, and we’re still here. Tom Tuttle does a great job of putting everything together,” said race director Brian Shepherd.
“We appreciate the (Syracuse Community Center) letting us come in; that helps a lot. You’re out in the humidity, and you can come in the air conditioning a little bit. It helps us set up the night before, so we appreciate them, and the whole town in general is just great about giving.”
