Katherine “Kathy” D. Penrose, 84, Rochester, passed away at 6:55 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2019, at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.

She was born on Dec. 12, 1934, in Greenville, South Carolina, the daughter of Charles and Kate (DuPre) Mabe. Penrose graduated from Furman University and the Greenville Hospital School of Nursing and started her professional career in nursing.

Penrose worked as a registered nurse for many years. She had served as director of nursing at Hickory Creek of Rochester. She previously was a nurse at Greenville General Hospital, Greenville, South Carolina, the Health Center at St. Joseph College and doctor’s offices in Rensselaer. She had been a member of the Rochester Rotary Club, Rochester Elks’ Lodge and the Furman University Alumni Association.

Survivors include her children, Kenneth and wife Carmen Zawodny, Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania; Mary Griffin and companion Lee Lovelace, Nashua, New Hampshire; Patty Zawodny, Toledo, Ohio; Stephen and wife Mary Zawodny, Erie, Michigan; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one sister.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
