SYRACUSE — Visitors to Wawasee High School will likely see group photos of students inducted into the school’s Academic Hall of Fame displayed prominently near the main entrance. Soon, another photo will be added.

A total of 40 students, about 17 percent of the projected graduating class of 239 seniors, were inducted into the Wawasee High School Academic Hall of Fame during the 51st annual banquet in the high school cafeteria Thursday evening, April 25.

In order to be eligible for the Academic Hall of Fame, students must carry a cumulative grade point average of at least 10.0 during their four years of high school, the equivalent of an A-minus.

Julie Baird, a German teacher at the high school, said the banquet is a “celebration of academic success.” She said these students are not afraid to work hard to accomplish their goals and are willing to accept challenges.

Baird talked about how the world has changed so much since this group of students was born in about 2001. “We now have refrigerators that talk to smartphones,” she said.

Students are facing an “uncertain and scary future,” but also one that is exciting, she noted.

Vince Beasley, assistant principal at the high school, said those inducted into the hall of fame “are setting yourself up for the next level” and have learned time management skills and good study habits.

A meal was catered by Dan’s Pies with the assistance of Pathways culinary arts students.
