ELKHART – Goshen Ultimate Summer League will turn it up to 11 this summer.

The league will begin its 11th annual season on May 21 at OxBow County Park, though free pickup games  are planned from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays beginning April 23.

Ultimate, also known as Ultimate Frisbee, uses a flying disc in a game similar to both soccer and American football. Players throw the disc to advance it down the field against another team and try to score in an end zone. Teams put seven players on the field to play offense and defense and substitute between points.

The league has grown from nearly 100 players on six teams its first year in 2009 to 180 the last two years.

“Goshen Ultimate Summer League is a great place for new and experienced players to gather to play this amazing game,” said GUSL President Glen Kauffmann. “We take a lot of pride in how we combine sport and sportsmanship as we emphasize learning skills and the spirit of the game.”

The cost is $40, $35 for students, until May 14, when the price goes up $5. Registration includes a shirt and disc, but not entry into OxBow.

Games will be on Tuesday nights at Oxbow starting at 6:30 p.m. League play ends July 30, followed by a tournament on Saturday, August 3.

The league is offering free clinics to help newcomers gain skills.

• The women’s clinic is 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. May 18.

• Skills clinics are planned for 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. May 25 and June 8. The clinics are open even to those who don’t join the league.

Ultimate emphasizes sportsmanship through “spirit of the game” rules. Team captains teach these along with disc-handling skills and strategy. The league is open to males and females in their teens or older.
