INDIANAPOLIS – Grace ended its men’s basketball season with some melancholy excitement, celebrating the Hall of Fame career of Jim Kessler in his final season as Lancers head coach.

Now, Scott Moore is looking to make his debut with a splash.

That tidal wave could start with one of Moore’s prized recruits, Myles Johnson, who was bestowed a tremendous honor this week. Johnson, a senior homeschooler from Indianapolis, was named the Pete Maravich Award Winner as the National Homeschool Player of the Year after leading his Indianapolis Wildcats team to a NCHBC national championship, 51-50, over the Oklahoma City Storm on March 16.

Johnson, a 6-6 forward, eclipsed the 2000-point plateau during this year’s national tournament, and has quite a résumé coming to Winona Lake in the fall. Johnson averaged 23.1 points per game in 38 games for the Wildcats, but also averaged 11.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.4 steals and 1.1 blocks per night in an incredible senior year. Johnson scored 877 points this past season on 51 percent shooting from the floor, and hit 73 percent from the free throw line.

Johnson reached double digits in all but two of the 38 games he played – and those two games he had nine points – and had a double-double in points and rebounds in 21 contests. In back-to-back games in late January and early February, Johnson posted totals of 31 points and 20 rebounds (nine offensive) and then 47 points and 16 rebounds (seven offensive) in a pair of wins. He achieved at least 14 rebounds 14 times this season.

Indianapolis Wildcats finished 32-6 this season, with four of those losses coming to IHSAA member schools, including a 73-58 loss to two-time Class 3-A state finalist Culver Academy. The Wildcats did compete against some area teams, posting a 97-53 win over Benton Home School and a 101-96 win over South Bend Adams.
