FORT WAYNE – Emergency responders were called to a river in Fort Wayne by an OnStar operator early Sunday morning, Feb. 24, and found the body of a South Whitley man, who died from drowning after his car plunged into near-freezing water.

Brian Coburn, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene after his body was discovered in a submerged car that officials pulled from the St. Marys River.

According to area reports, emergency responders were called to the area of Rudisill and Broadway streets at approximately 3:30 a.m. Sunday on a tip from an OnStar operator. Initially, the operator said it was believed the call came from either in the river or beside it. The operator called later to confirm the call was coming from a car that was in the water.

Divers from the Fort Wayne Fire Department were used to retrieve the car and Coburn’s body. Officials reported that no one else was in the car. Officials reported that the accident is still under investigation.
