
Charles L. “Larry” Gates, 91, North Webster, passed away at 8:40 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, at Grace Village Healthcare in Warsaw. He was born Dec. 28, 1927, in Battle Creek, Mich. to Carl Wendell and Velma (Sommers) Gates.
He grew up in Mishawaka, and graduated in 1947 from Mishawaka High School. He was married on Feb. 23, 1983, in Tucson, Ariz. to Patty Rae (Cheek) Owen, who survives. He was the former owner and operator of Tip Top Appliances in Tucson, Ariz. for 20+ years, worked at Singer Manufacturing in South Bend for 20+ years, and retired from Uniroyal in Mishawaka after several years. He moved to Tucson, Ariz., in 1965, returned to Mishawaka in 1992, moved to Lake Estates near Warsaw in 2002, and then to North Webster in 2016.
He was a member of the Sons of American Legion Post 253 in North Webster and was an avid sportsman & fisherman.
He is survived by wife, Patty Gates, North Webster; two daughters: Cathie Jo (Daniel) Chamberlain and Traci Gates, both of Tucson, Ariz.; son, Terry Lee (Theresa) Gates, Mishawaka; five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, great grandson, Tony Berea, and brother, Don Gates.
Cremation will take place at Cremation Services of Kosciusko County, 4356 N. SR 15, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Owen Family Funeral Home, SR 13 and CR 500N, North Webster. Private family burial will take place at a later date.
