FORT WORTH, TEXAS — A Texas man has died after his vape pen exploded in his face.

William Brown, 24, died after an artery was severed from an exploding vaporizer pen, according to a report from the medical examiner.

“He popped it and it exploded, and that’s when it shot across his mouth,” Alice Brown, William’s grandmother, said.

Brown said that the battery melted plastic in her car and sent debris flying into her grandson’s face and neck, 10News reported. She said that her car was covered in blood. Her grandson was rushed to the hospital and died there two days later.

It’s unclear what type of vaping pen Brown was using, according to 10News.

A study published in Tobacco Control found more than 2000 e-cigarette explosions and burn injuries in U.S. emergency rooms from 2015 to 2017, according to 10News. That study concluded there were likely far more injuries that went unreported.
