WATERFORD MILLS – For a pair of teams that needed a good showing, Lakeland Christian Academy got that and maybe a little more at the Bethany Christian boys and girls basketball tournaments.

LCA went 1-1 in both boys and girls brackets, the girls losing to Bethany Christian 40-38 on a last-second putback but coming back to win 31-19 over South Bend Trinity. The boys held off Bethany Christian, 45-43, but couldn’t keep pace with Elkhart Christian in a 67-52 loss in the tourney championship.

Mariah Miller tapped in a putback attempt with one second left to give Bethany a win over LCA in the morning semi-final. Miller’s game winner came following a putback bucket from LCA’s Carly O’Hara with 10 seconds to go to tie the game at 38. The game was played at one possession for the final four minutes of the game.

Miller led the Bruins with 15 points and Anya Kauffman finished with 10 points. Tori Calizo had 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals for LCA and Anna Reimink had 10 points, five steals and four rebounds. Bethany forced LCA into 22 turnovers and had seven offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter.

In the consolation game, LCA collected 15 steals and 25 rebounds in holding Trinity at bay. Tori Calizo had six points and five rebounds, and the trio of O’Hara, Abigail Fishel and Lauren Starrett each had four rebounds. Jessi Calizo added 10 points and four steals and Reimink had seven points, five steals, three rebounds and three assists.

Clare Hunsberger and AJ Thomas each had five points for the Titans.

Bethany won the girls tourney, beating Elkhart Christian 46-35 in the championship. ECA beat South Bend Trinity 35-13 in the second morning semi-final.

LCA got into a shootout with ECA in the boys final, but a hotter start from the Eagles proved too much for LCA to overcome.

ECA ran out to a 28-19 lead in the first half and upped its point totals to 17 and 22 in the third and fourth quarters to hold off the Cougars. Luke Burns led the Eagles in the championship game with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Bryce Coursen added 11 points.

LCA had three players hit double figures with Landon Paris and Jake Harmon both with 16 points and Landon Twombly at 10 points. Both Harmon and Twombly were named to the All-Tournament Team.

In the semi-final against the Bruins, Twombly turned a pair of steals into layups and then dropped a three to give LCA a quick 12-2 lead, which grew into 23-13 halftime lead. But the Bruins mounted a comeback to tie the game at 43 before Twombly calmly sank two free throws to give the Cougars the win.

Twombly had 18 points, five steals, four rebounds and four assists to lead LCA. Harmon dropped 15 points and five rebounds.

ECA made the championship by holding off Trinity 44-41 in the morning semi-final.

The Lady Cougars (7-7) will take time off until it hosts the Cougar Classic starting Dec. 27. The Cougars (2-7) visits Tri-Central on Tuesday.
