Robotics Team Does Well In First Tourney

SYRACUSE — Wawasee’s robotics team won the excellence award, robotics skills champion, tournament championship and qualified two teams for state in the season’s first tourney at Walker Career Center in Indianapolis Saturday, Nov. 3.

“Winning the big three awards and earning two state qualifying spots is good start to the season,” said Jed Wandland, head coach of the robotics team. “All our teams showed their best and conducted themselves with dignity and good sportsmanship. We had incredible overall team achievements.”

Wawasee had 10 out of 11 teams in the round of 16 of the elimination bracket. They also had first, third, fourth and 10th place finishes in skills challenge, a time trial to see how many points the robot can score by itself in one minute driver and one minute autonomous periods. Team 574C is now ranked second in the world in this challenge.

574M Amazon — sixth place, fourth robot skills, quarterfinals — Alison Cole, Taylor Fiedeke, Keegan Cook, Tess Fancil

574J Xerxes — 13th place, finals round of 16 — Ethan Hays, Tyler Bailey, Gage Beezley

574A Legends — 22nd place, finals round of 16 — Joey Sunday, Even Gerding

574H Samurai — tourney 23rd place, finals round of 16 — Evan Brower

574B Berserker — 28th place, finals round of 16 — Anah Sommers, Alivia Stidams, Adrieanna Yoder

574F Barbarian — 30th place — Vanessa Wright, Mykie Moses, Tess Helfers

574G Iron Knight — 31st place, finals round of 16 — Colten Edger, Harry Doss, Brian Schlabach, Jossie Coy

574K Athena — 36th place, 10th robotics skills, finals round of 16 — Makenna Tharp, Norah Miller, Andrea Mickley

The next tournament is Saturday, Nov. 10, at Crown Point High School.
