ELKHART COUNTY — A 7-year-old murder mystery has allegedly been solved in Goshen.
An arrest has been made in connection with the October 2011 murder of Goshen College professor James Miller.
Miller died of blunt force and sharp force injuries during a home invasion-style burglary.
“His name is Winston Earl Corbett. Winston Corbett was 16 years old (and from Goshen) at the time of this event. He is now 23. Although I cannot give specific facts and details of this investigation at this time because it is still ongoing, what I can tell you is that this chapter is now closed and moving on to the next,” Elkhart County Prosecutor Vicki Becker said during a Tuesday afternoon news conference.
Despite the seven years that have passed, police said they never stopped working the case and thanked the community for its patience.
“Want to assure the community and the family and the officers that even though publicly you didn’t see much happening, we never let this case go,” said Goshen Police Chief Jose Miller.
Prosecutor Becker asked the media not to bother the victim’s family, but described their reactions as “relief, obviously, perhaps a little bit of disbelief of am I really hearing this, but definitely relief and now kind of changing gears to what happens next.”
It’s alleged that Corbett also severely injured Miller’s wife, Linda, and for that he will face an additional charge of attempted murder.
“The problem is science had not caught up with where we are today. Now that we have been able to identify some of the information that was actually located in the crime scene, then we are able to move forward. Definitive results were received this morning from the Indiana State Police Laboratory,” Becker said.
Corbett is scheduled to make his initial appearance on Thursday of next week.
