INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana secretary of state Connie Lawson is warning investors to watch out for investment or charitable scams, in the wake of Hurricane Florence.
Secretary Lawson told our reporting partners, 1480 News Now, that natural disasters can bring out the good and bad in people.
She wants to remind you to look out for red flags of hurricane-related scams, such as unsolicited emails, social media messages, crowdfunding pitches or telephone calls promoting to help storm victims.
The secretary share three tips to help investors avoid disaster related scams:
-Delete unwanted emails and hang up on aggressive callers advertising Hurricane related investments
-Use common sense. Claims of guaranteed returns are red flags.
-Do your homework. Secretary Lawson suggests to contact her office to check that both the seller and investment are licensed and registered.
