CONCORD 4, WAWASEE 1
The Warriors had the Class 3-A No. 14 Concord Minutemen on the ropes, but the wheels fell off the upset train in Saturday’s Northern Lakes Conference opener for both clubs.
Wawasee trailed just 2-1 midway through the second half, but failing to hold possession for most of the half, the Warriors couldn’t keep Concord off the board.
Landon Fisher had a goal and an assist, Ariel De La Paz had a goal and two assists, and Eusebio Espanoza and Mario Mejia both had goals for the Minutemen, which fired 12 shots at Dillon Drake, who stopped the other eight attempts.
Wawasee got on the board in the first half when Chris Pena made a long run and tucked home the reward. The goal in the fifth minute tied the match, which held until the 32nd minute when the Minutemen grabbed the lead again.
“First half the game plan was to absorb a little bit of that pressure, be patient off the ball and allow them to make mistakes and then counter. That’s what we are good at doing,” said Wawasee head coach Jordan Sharp. “The second half we got frustrated. Instead of absorbing that pressure, we started stabbing here and there and we lost that unity as a team, and we were just all over the place running around and not organized. I think that we got mentally fatigued and lost the game plan.”
The JV game ended in a 0-0 draw.
Wawasee (2-1) will host Bremen Tuesday afternoon.
LAKELAND CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 9, NORTH MIAMI 1
An extremely impressive result for LCA against a North Miami side that came into Saturday’s match ranked No. 19 in the Class 1-A poll.
Theran McKeever collected a hat trick and two assists in the LCA onslaught, with Parker Stewart registering two goals and four assists. Micah Mansfield also had two goals while teammates Trenton Parker and Mark McQuade also found the back of the net.
Trevor Blakely potted the lone goal for North Miami.
Remington Swanson stopped three shots for the Cougars.
LCA (3-0), which has outscored its opponents 19-3 to open the season, will host longtime rival Bethany Christian Thursday.
NORTHWOOD 2, ANGOLA 0
The Panthers earned a tough road win Saturday morning.
Jerson Sanchez potted both goals for the Panthers, one on an assist from Sebastian Guillen.
The NorthWood defense, after holding Tippecanoe Valley without a shot in its opener Thursday, allowed just two Hornet shots. Keeper Luke Lingle corralled both attempts, earning the clean sheet.
NorthWood (2-0) will get its biggest test to date Thursday when it hosts Northridge in its NLC opener.
