SYRACUSE — A Goshen man was arrested after using counterfeit bills at local gas stations.

Damian Lee Cassidy, 19, 2606 S. Main St., Goshen, is being charged with counterfeiting, a level 6 felony.

On June 3, an officer with the North Webster Police Department responded to a report of a subject using counterfeit bills at a Circle K gas station. The officer spoke with the store manager, who advised two counterfeit $20 bills were used at 1:09 a.m. and 3:05 a.m. Sunday, June 3.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the store manager provided a copy of a security video to the officer. The footage shows at 1:07 a.m., a vehicle entered the parking lot of the business. Two females and two males entered the gas station. The males were identified as Cassidy and Kevin Gilmore. A female who used one of the counterfeit bills was identified as Brandy Allen.

At 3:01 a.m., the same vehicle arrived at the business. Allen exited the vehicle and used a second counterfeit $20 bill.

On June 5, a North Webster police officer went to the Circle K gas station, as one of the subjects using counterfeit money was back in the store. The officer arrived and found Cassidy. Cassidy admitted he was traveling with Allen, Gilmore, and a second female on June 3. He advised he didn’t know anything about counterfeit bills being used.

The officer obtained text messages that Cassidy sent to a confidential informant number on June 5. In the messages, Cassidy said that the police interrogated him over fake money. When Cassidy was questioned about the bills passing the pen test, he said they cleared $200 off McDonalds and gas stations. Therefore, Cassidy admitted he knew about the counterfeit bills.

On June 5, an officer with the Syracuse Police Department responded to a report of a counterfeit bill used at Wilby’s Gas Station. An employee received two counterfeit $20 bills.

On June 5, an officer with the Churubusco Police Department arrested Gilmore and Allen. The vehicle they were using had been reported stolen from Elkhart County. When officers searched Gilmore, they located a counterfeit $20 bill. They also located a counterfeit $100 bill, papers with US currency printed on one side, and a DeskJet printer and scanner in the vehicle.

The Syracuse Police Department obtained surveillance video from Wilby’s and witnessed Cassidy pay for gasoline with a counterfeit $20 bill.

Cassidy was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on July 30, with a $5,250 surety and cash bond. Gilmore and Allen are both currently wanted on warrants. Gilmore faces a charge of aiding and inducing counterfeiting, a level 6 felony. Allen faces two counts of counterfeiting, both level 6 felonies.
