MENTONE — A Claypool man was arrested after overdosing on heroin.

Brady Lee Shepherd, 27, 3541 W. Hill Lake Road, Claypool, is being charged with possession of a narcotic drug and possession of a syringe, both level 6 felonies.

On June 29,  an officer with the Mentone Police Department responded to a report of a drug overdose and CPR in progress at a residence. Upon arrival, officers were allowed entry into the residence by a female. The overdose victim, Shepherd, was laying on the floor, fading in and out of consciousness.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the officer administered a dose of Narcan to Shepherd. EMS then arrived at the scene. As the officer was led to Shepherd, he walked past an open door where he noticed a hypodermic needle and syringe on the countertop next to a cellular device. The officer also observed a cap to a hypodermic needle and syringe laying on the bathroom floor.

The officer spoke with a male at the residence who advised that Shepherd was just visiting and didn’t live there. After obtaining a search warrant, officers found a syringe that contained a brown liquid on the bathroom counter. On the floor, officers found a pill bottle that contained two marijuana cigarettes. Officers also discovered a cellophane wrapper that tested positive for methamphetamine.

In a living room, officers found a lockbox that contained a syringe, two smoking devices with residue, four straws, scales, a grinder and multiple Dormin pills.

Shepherd admitted that he had injected heroin with a syringe. He advised he purchased the heroin in South Bend.

Shepherd was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on July 19, with a $5,250 surety and cash bond.
