
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY — Indiana DNR confirmed Monday afternoon officers found the body of a 35-year-old Elkhart man who went missing Sunday after he was knocked off a paddle boat during a storm.
Officials identified the man as Jose Eduardo Garcia Garcia, 35.
Garcia Garcia’s body was discovered 20 yards outside of the initial perimeter set up by police.
“We were utilizing side-scan sonar to image the bottom of the lake and we were able to locate him actually really close to shore, toward the surface of the water,” says Indiana Conservation Police Sergeant Ashlee Jackson.
Sergeant Jackson says the body was found in roughly six feet of water.
Police say neither of the men were wearing life jackets at the time.
Police issuing this reminder to all potential boaters visiting the park.
“We just want to remind anyone that’s going to be on or near the water to always wear are life jacket,” says Sergeant Jackson. “A life jacket that’s Coast Guard approved that it fits the person that’s supposed to wear it.”
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed tomorrow in Fort Wayne. St Joseph’s County will be taking over the remainder of the investigation.
