SYRACUSE — Temperatures in the high 80s with heat indexes in the 90s, didn’t detour over 200 people who attended “The Event” hosted by Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation Friday evening, June 29. This was the foundation’s first social event with next years event already set.
Guests mingled finding old friends and getting to know those they never met before.
A large tent with tables and chairs was set up adjacent to the Ruddell Pavilion with HiFi 2 Wifi played a variety of music. Outside seating under the shade of large trees was also available and a choice of many.
Blu-Spoon Catablu Restaurant, Fort Wayne, provided the food for the evening, which many enjoyed eating while talking with old friends and making new friends.

There were no sales pitches or pleas for donations. It was just an evening of friends gathering with friends in an outdoor setting. Many were seen walking the trails around the property and getting a new view of the evening’s sunset from the site of the new amphitheater.
“We’re so grateful for this amazing turnout for the first true social event,” stated Dr. Joan Szynal, WACF board president. “It was an opportunity for more people to come and learn about the watershed and the great work we do for Wawasee and Syracuse lakes.”
She added the evening also provided an opportunity for people to get to know the property and organization and the great work it does.
The evening was organized by Sherry Swank, WPOA board member and event committee chairwoman, with assistance of Holly Tuttle, Marie and Gordon Moore, Kim Herr, Amy Hodgson and Scott Beasley.
“I’m very happy with the crowd. It’s a great group and look forward for next year,” said Heather Harwood, WACF executive director.
Winners of the raffle drawing were Angie Racolta who won the float; Andrew Mortan who won the Pollywood bench; and Sally Gindling, who won the paddle board. All participants had to be present to win.
If you missed this year’s social event of the year, mark your calendar as “The Event” will become an annual event. Next year’s date will be Friday, June 28.
