SYRACUSE — Dr. Tom Edington, superintendent of the Wawasee Community School Corporation, will become the president of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents for the 2018-19 school year during an installation ceremony Friday, June 8, at the Oakwood Resort in Syracuse.

Edington has been superintendent at Wawasee since January 2008 and has served as president-elect of the association during the current school year. During the 2016-17 year he was vice president.

Officers are elected by the membership. Members of the association include mostly public school superintendents along with central office administrative personnel and others.

As president Edington will preside during the annual meeting and also during training sessions throughout the year. The president of IAPSS also makes appointments to the various councils, such as for one example the legislative council.

Edington noted he felt “it was time to step forward to represent state superintendents.” He said it will be a challenge since he is a three-hour drive away from where IAPSS is based in Indianapolis, but email and instant messaging technology makes it easier to stay in contact with superintendents statewide.

He has been a member of IAPSS since he became a superintendent 22 years ago and in the past has chaired various committees of the association.

IAPSS advocates for the needs of Indiana school children, monitors and responds to state legislation and works with other education related organizations such as the state principals association, state school board association and others.

Edington will replace outgoing IAPSS President Dr. Jeff Butts, superintendent of the MSD of Wayne Township school corporation in Indianapolis.
