Approximately 30 volunteers participated in KCVy Cycling’s Earth Day Trail Work Day.

WINONA LAKE — KCV Cycling held its annual Earth Day Trail Work Day in Winona Lake this morning, Saturday, April 21.

Approximately 30 people, including students from local Warsaw schools, attended and helped perform maintenance work. Tasks included picking up trash and fallen limbs, removing downed trees, clearing out drainage, checking for erosion and checking all bridges.

The event has been taking place for about 10 years. During the work day, KCV Cycling members and volunteers from Kosciusko County help complete basic maintenance at the Winona Lake Trails.

“We appreciate this bigger public work day as an opportunity to introduce people to the scope of work and responsibilities it takes to maintain the gem of a resource we have with the Winona Lake Trails,” said Greg Demopoulos, president of KCV Cycling.

KCV Cycling is responsible for maintaining the trails and making sure they are in good shape for events such as the Fat and Skinny Tire Fest.

Demopoulos thanked those who both use and maintain the trails. He stated that the public can do basic tasks that will help protect the trails and keep them open to the public.

“Pick up any trash you see and report any bridge damage or fallen trees blocking the trails,” Demopoulos said. “Every little bit of help goes a long way.”

Volunteers worked together to remove a downed tree from a trail.
