MICHIGAN CITY — First responders at the Coolspring Township Fire Department in Michigan City are applauding the parents of a baby left in their Safe Haven Baby Box.

The baby was dropped off last evening.

The alarm inside the box went off at 7:05 p.m., and a first responder was on scene just 1 minute later, holding the baby in his arms.

Coolspring Township is ecstatic that the parent utilized the baby box. It is the second baby who has been dropped off at this box. The first one was back in November.

First responder Chuck Kohler described the emotions he felt when he saw the baby:

“Happy, you know,” he said. “Ecstatic that I hear the cry, you want to know that the baby is breathing. That’s one of the good things, is the baby is OK.”

Coolspring Township cannot release the sex of the baby, but they say the baby is healthy and doing well.
