Eva Mae (Foss) Buchanan, 90, North Manchester, formerly of Metropolis, Ill., passed away March 3, 2018, in North Manchester.

She was born May 25, 1927 to Fred and Lena (Quint) Foss in rural Massac County, Ill. She married Dr. William J. Buchanan on Dec. 13, 1953, in Metropolis, Ill. He preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 2009. In October of 2017 she then moved to assisted living in North Manchester where she was able to spend more time with her family.

The Buchanan’s moved their young family to Danville, Ill. in 1964. While Mr. Buchanan built his optometry practice, she devoted her time to raising their two daughters, Sandra and Lisa. They enjoyed many visits with family in southern Illinois and vacations in Florida together. After his retirement they traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe.  They especially loved their trips out west looking for buffalo with her brother, Jim and his wife Carolyn Foss.

Mrs. Buchanan had many interests including collecting antiques, refinishing antique furniture, and playing golf with Bill. She was well known for her beautiful flower gardens. She loved bringing home ferns and flowers from southern Illinois to be transplanted in her yard. Buying flowers from Danville Gardens was always a highlight. Jim Meyer kept her yard looking immaculate and they loved driving around looking at the countryside. One of her greatest passions was china painting.  For over 35 years she and a group of friends including her dear friend, Carryl Fox, painted together and shared many hours of fellowship.  Her legacy will live on with the flowers she shared and the painted china she lovingly created.

She was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and participated in the Tuesday morning Bible study.  She was a longtime member of Danville Garden Club and Country Garden China Guild. Mrs. Buchanan especially loved eating lunch at Charlotte’s Coffee and Tea Shop and made many good friends there.

Mrs. Buchanan was preceded in death by her loving husband; parents: Lena and Fred Foss; and her brothers: Lowell and Billy Joe. She is survived by her daughters: Sandra Buchanan (Gary) of Mentone; and Lisa Kewley (Rich) of Appleton, Wisc. She dearly loved her grandchildren: Elizabeth Hann (Bryan), Ryan Hann (Jeanna), Eve Kewley, Nick Kewley and Alicia McCanna.  She is also survived by Debbie Owens who she considered to be her third daughter. Her brother Jim Foss and nieces survive in Metropolis, Ill.  Her welcoming spirit, warm smile and the twinkle in her eye will be kept alive in our hearts.

Visitation for Eva will be held from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, March 10 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 5187 Old Marion Rd, Metropolis, Ill. Funeral service and burial will follow.  Family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or the charity of your choice.
