FORT WAYNE – The Warsaw boys basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a 46-32 loss at Carroll Friday night.
The Class 4-A No. 13 Chargers pulled away in the second half to top the Tigers for the fifth time in the last seven meetings between the two.
Carroll led 12-7 after the first quarter and 21-17 at halftime. The Chargers led 32-25 at the end of the third period before outscoring the Tigers 14-7 in the final frame.
Warsaw suffered through a tough shooting night in losing for the fourth time in its last five games. The Tigers were 12-34 overall from the field, including 4-14 from 3-point land. Warsaw was just 4-8 from the free throw line and were also out rebounded by a 27-23 margin in the loss.
Junior guard Nolan Groninger led the Tiger offense with 11 points.
Zach Riley had eight points to go with five rebounds for Warsaw, which falls to 11-11. Tyler Metzinger scored four points and Jack Rhoades added three. The trio of Nick Marsh, Blake Marsh and Jaylen Reese each finished with two points. Metzinger also grabbed five rebounds.
David Ejah, a 6-5 junior forward, led Carroll with a game-high 14 points. Senior guard Reece Swoverland added 11 points for the Chargers.
Carroll, which won for the 14th time in its last 15 games, shot 15-38 from the field. The 18-3 Chargers hit 7-18 from distance and 9-12 from the line.
Carroll hit a late 3-pointer to win the junior varsity game 58-57. Wyatt Amiss led the Tigers with 19 points. Jaylen Coon scored 14 points and Keagan Larsh added nine for the JV team, which finishes its season at 12-8.
Warsaw will face Goshen Tuesday night in the opening game of the Class 4-A Elkhart Sectional. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at North Side Gym. The Tigers are the two-time defending champions in the sectional.
