NEW PARIS — A Wednesday morning accident involving two vehicles has resulted in the death of a Mishawaka man. According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department and reports from the scene, Anthony Eddy, 25, was driving a 2011 Ford F-250 pickup truck pulling two empty boat trailers eastbound on US 6, east of SR 15 at 9:55 a.m.

Witnesses at the scene reported that a Elkhart County Highway Department dump truck also was traveling eastbound ahead of the pickup and was stopped to make a left turn onto CR 25. The dump truck driver reported that he saw the pickup in his rearview mirror coming behind him at a high rate of speed.

The dump truck driver made an emergency right turn onto CR 25 in an attempt to clear the roadway for the pickup. He advised that the pickup driver was fishtailing in an attempt to slow his vehicle but swerved into the westbound lane where he collided head-on with a 1998 Volvo semi pulling a car carrier trailer loaded with truck cabs, which was driven by Richard Brown, 42, North Manchester.

In an attempt to avoid a collision, Brown’s semi went off the north side of US 6 where it collided with a NIPSCO utility pole, which was splintered into nearly two pieces.

Eddy, the driver of the pickup, was pronounced dead at the scene. Brown was being transported to Goshen Hospital for treatment on a cut on his left hand, a complaint of pain to his right hand and non-life threatening injuries. Both men were reportedly wearing seatbelts. The dump truck driver, who was not involved in the collision, was unhurt.

US 6 between SR 15 and CR 25 was closed for a few hours following the accident for scene reconstruction and cleanup.

Jackson Township EMS, New Paris Fire Department and Goshen Paramedics also responded to the scene.
