I recently had the opportunity to watch the film “Dunkirk”, which is the highest grossing WWII film of all time. It is the true story of the evacuation of English soldiers during WWII from the French beach of Dunkirk. The German’s are quickly approaching from the east, making the trapped soldiers anxious, and nervous, awaiting their fate. Even though they are afraid, they remain hopeful of a rescue.

The evacuation, told from three perspectives, land, sea and air captivates your mind and heart as you feel the plight of the characters. Director Christopher Nolan tells this historic story at times, with very little dialogue. With that said, he makes the tension real and palpable.

Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Kenneth Branagh are exceptional in their portrayals. One Direction’s Harry Styles is very impressive in his role as Private Alex.

Even though “Dunkirk” is not yet available on DVD for you to watch, the Warsaw Community Public Library has over 150 war films in their collection. Here are a few suggestions of films you might want to watch.

Nothing about war is comical or fun but there are war films that are funny and comedic. “MASH”, “1941”, “Good Morning Vietnam” and “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” are some of the funniest war films available.

If your significant other does not like films that involve action and battles, then go with a romantic war film. “Pearl Harbor”, “The English Patient”, “In Love & War”, or “Casablanca” are all romance worthy.

The library also has several award winning war films. “Saving Private Ryan”, “The Hurt Locker”, “Platoon”, “Schindler’s List” and “American Sniper” are some of the best movies involving war.

Documentary war films are an excellent source of information. “Last Days of Vietnam”, “The Korean War in Color”, “The Control Room” and “The Civil War”, which is a Ken Burns film, are informative and interesting.

Through the ages there has been many wars won and lost. Some films that take place during ancient times that depict warfare are “300”, “Troy”, “Braveheart” “Ben Hur” and “The Last Samurai”. If your preference is modern day conflicts, “Stop Loss”, “War Dogs”, “Grace is gone”, and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” are excellent choices.

The Revolutionary War, The United States Civil War, WWI, WII, and the Vietnam War are popular war film genres. “The Patriot”, “Lincoln”, “Sergeant York”, “From Here to Eternity”, “Hamburger Hill” and a plethora of other films are all available at the Warsaw Community Public Library.
