Woman Sentenced For Stealing Controllers, Games

WARSAW — A Warsaw woman is facing 2 1/2 years in jail for stealing and reselling game controllers and video games.

Rachael Leann Adams, 39, was sentenced today, Dec. 4, on two counts of theft with enhancements, level 6 felonies, stemming from a November 2016 incident.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed Feb. 3, an officer with the Warsaw Police Department responded to a theft at Meijer on Nov. 27, 2016, and was advised Adams had scanned and bagged two Fusion Xbox controllers at a self-checkout but then walked away without paying. Loss prevention observed Adams to be in possession of three Fusion controllers and a stack of video games with a total value of $326.88.

Loss prevention advised officers that around 30 minutes after the incident they received information from GameStop advising three of the controllers had come into the store and looked new. When the officer spoke with GameStop they advised that a male frequently seen with Adams who had sold three controllers and 10 games. They further advised that on Nov. 21, 2016, they had purchased four controllers from the man, and three controllers from Adams on Nov. 22.

The affidavit states that on Dec. 28, 2016, WPD again responded to a theft at Meijer. Adams had again scanned items at self-checkout and then proceeded without paying. On this occasion Adams was observed with two Sony PlayStation controllers, four PlayStation games and four Xbox games with a total value of $249.90. When loss prevention approached Adams at her vehicle, she refused to stop and got into the passenger side. The male driver is the same male observed selling to GameStop.

Adams was arrested on a warrant for the thefts on July 20.

In court, Adams blamed drug use for her actions, admitting to making “horrible choices.” She has faced nine felony convictions in seven years.

Judge Michael Reed sentenced Adams to one year and three months for each charge. Served consecutively that equates to 2 1/2 years. Adams will receive 138 days credit for time served with good time pending.

Adams was ordered to pay Meijer restitution in the amount of $579.78.
