WARSAW — An additional arrest has been made after several fake $100 bills were recently used at several local businesses. A Mentone man has been charged after he bought the bills online, gave them to a female friend and was with her when she made fraudulent purchases.
Matthew Dillan Mahaska, 24, 6663 West CR 500S 1, Mentone, is being charged with three counts of counterfeiting, all level 6 felonies.
In November, Samantha Burleson used counterfeit $100 bills to make purchases at the Animal Welfare League, McDonald’s, Sherman and Lins Discount, Steak ‘N Shake, Home Digz, Bourbon Street Pizza and Taco Bell. All of the businesses are located within Kosciusko County.
Multiple employees identified Burleson as the suspect who used the counterfeit bills and she was arrested on Nov. 20.
Burleson advised that Mahaska purchased the counterfeit $100 bills over the internet. Together, the two used a bill to purchase a used dishwasher from an individual. Burleson admitted she knew the bills were counterfeit. She further advised that Mahaska was with her everytime she used a counterfeit bill.
An officer with the Warsaw Police Department spoke with Mahaska who admitted to buying the bills from Amazon. He further advised he gave the bills to people as a joke.
Mahaska was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on Dec. 1 with a $5,250 surety and cash bond.
