A pursuit of a suspected drunk driver in LaPorte turned out to be a 7-year-old boy.

It happened early Tuesday morning at 3 a.m.

According to LaPorte Police, Captain Adam Klimczak saw a car in the parking lot of Family Video with no headlights on that pulled onto Lincolnway without seeing if there was oncoming traffic.

He began following the car and noticed it was weaving in and out of both eastbound lanes at just 15 miles per hour.

Police said the vehicle continued on for well over a mile reaching 40 miles per hour once the officer activated his lights and siren.

He was then joined in the pursuit by Officer Matthew Drangmeister.

The 7-year-old more than doubled his speed and began fishtailing on the state highway, then spun out and crashed through a metal fence outside and area business.

Both officers pinned the vehicle in with their squad cars. They realized the driver was a 7-year-old boy after they found him in the back seat trying to hide.

The boy was transported to the police station and allowed to go home after his mother showed up.

She said the car belonged to her live-in boyfriend and revealed her son has been having behavioral problems lately at school, according to police.

They were both advised on the dangers of the boy’s actions. She was also given tips on how to prevent another such occurrence, police said.

Police did not reveal exactly how the boy managed to drive off in vehicle and why it happened well before sunrise.
